In response to rising concerns about the illegal and dangerous use of e-scooters and e-bikes, Queensland Police have intensified patrols in the Maroochydore area during the September school holidays. As part of Operation Raptor Wheelie, police are conducting both high visibility and covert patrols to address the expected increase in traffic and offences involving these vehicles.

Since its commencement in July, the operation has focused on educating the public and enforcing laws to reduce road trauma and enhance safety for e-scooter and e-bike riders and the wider community. Recent incidents include the interception of a Zyloyty H9 e-bike, ridden by a 15-year-old, and a heavily modified mountain bike with over 3000 watts of power, ridden by another 15-year-old. Both youths have been dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.

Acting Senior Sergeant Jacob Flaherty emphasized the importance of education alongside enforcement. “Our goal is to educate riders about their responsibilities when riding an e-scooter or e-bike. However, we will take action against illegal or dangerous behavior,” he stated, highlighting that police presence will be both visible and undercover.

The operation aims to ensure the safety of the community and riders alike, with continued efforts to monitor areas popular among young people during the school break.
