A delegation from the European Parliament has concluded a three-day official visit to Dili, Timor-Leste, as the country prepares to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The 10-member team aimed to strengthen diplomatic ties and assess the nation’s progress in democracy, economic diversification, and regional integration. During their stay from September 15 to 17, the eurodeputies met with key Timor-Leste leaders, including President José Ramos Horta and various ministers, to discuss the country’s democratic transition and socio-economic challenges. Emphasizing the importance of diversifying Timor-Leste’s economy, the delegates highlighted the need to reduce reliance on oil revenues and enhance sectors such as agriculture and tourism. As Timor-Leste nears ASEAN membership, the delegation expressed support for the country’s strategic navigation in the Indo-Pacific region. They underscored the mutual commitment to democracy and multilateralism, with the European Union pledging continued partnership in governance, youth opportunities, and digital innovation. The delegation also engaged with opposition parties, civil society, and international organizations to explore themes of peace and reconciliation. Site visits to EU-funded projects, including Tibar Bay Port and local coffee plantations, were conducted to evaluate potential economic benefits and employment opportunities. Led by Francisco Assis, the delegation left Timor-Leste optimistic about the country’s future, praising its vibrant civil society and youth. Assis reaffirmed the European Union’s dedication to supporting Timor-Leste’s journey towards a prosperous and democratic future.
