MEPs Tackle Island Challenges in Corfu

In a strategic move to address the unique challenges faced by island regions, a delegation of ten Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) is convening in Corfu, Greece. The three-day visit, from September 15 to 17, is organized by the Committee on Regional Development and aims to align regional development and investment policies with local needs.

Led by MEP Marcos Ros Sempere, the delegation will engage with key stakeholders including Ioannis Trepeklis, the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, and Stefanos Poulimenos, the Mayor of Central Corfu. The discussions with local leaders, including representatives from the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy and the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, will center on climate adaptation and the economic challenges faced by insular regions.

The delegation will also evaluate projects funded by the European Regional Development Fund, particularly those focused on the rehabilitation of historical sites. The MEPs will meet with INSULEUR, the Network of Insular Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and the Hellenic Small Islands Network to discuss ongoing initiatives and future priorities.

A press conference will be held at the Ionian Parliament on September 17 at 11:10 Greek time, featuring both Mr. Ros Sempere and Governor Trepeklis, who will provide insights into the outcomes of their discussions and future plans for addressing the needs of island regions.
