Uganda is grappling with a severe refugee funding crisis as the nation struggles to support nearly two million new arrivals since the beginning of 2025. The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has issued a stark warning that the East African country may soon be unable to provide essential life-saving services and aid to the influx of refugees. According to the UNHCR, approximately 600 refugees arrive in Uganda daily, exacerbating the already dire situation. The increasing number of refugees is rapidly depleting available resources, leaving the nation in urgent need of international support to continue its humanitarian efforts. The funding shortfall threatens to disrupt critical services such as food, shelter, and healthcare for refugees, many of whom have fled conflict and persecution in neighboring countries. The UNHCR is calling for immediate financial assistance from the global community to prevent a humanitarian disaster and ensure that Uganda can maintain its longstanding tradition of providing refuge to those in need.
