A European Parliament delegation will visit Budapest from Oct. 26 to 28 to assess developments affecting the rule of law, democracy and fundamental rights following Hungary’s April 2026 parliamentary elections.

The delegation, organized at the request of the Parliament’s Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group, will examine pledges by Hungary’s new prime minister to restore the rule of law and bring the country into closer alignment with European Union and international standards.

Members of the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee are scheduled to meet government officials, parliamentary committees, opposition parties, the Constitutional Court, the National Judicial Council and anti-corruption bodies. They will also hold discussions with civil society and media representatives.

The mission will conclude with a press conference at the European Parliament’s Liaison Office in Budapest. Sophie Wilmès, a Renew Europe member from Belgium, will chair the delegation, which includes representatives from several political groups.
