Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a series of meetings and events on Oct. 6, addressing national defense, international cooperation and remembrance ceremonies in Kyiv. The day included a meeting of Ukraine’s top military leadership, discussions with an Israeli delegation and commemorations at Babyn Yar. At a meeting of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, officials discussed expanding electronic warfare capabilities, imposing additional sanctions on Russian weapons manufacturers and supplying Ukraine’s armed forces with long-range drones next year. Zelenskyy said the government would continue scaling up approaches that have proved effective. In a televised address, Zelenskyy warned that Ukrainian intelligence had updated information about Russia’s preparations for a possible large-scale strike. He urged residents to respond to missile alerts and said Ukraine’s armed forces and air defense systems were prepared to respond within their capabilities. He also called on international partners to provide additional defensive equipment. Zelenskyy later honored the victims of the Babyn Yar massacre alongside representatives of foreign delegations, marking the 85th anniversary of the mass shootings carried out during the Nazi occupation of Kyiv. He also met with Zeev Elkin, Israel’s additional minister in the Ministry of Finance, to discuss threats posed by Russian and Iranian Shahed drones. Separately, First Lady Olena Zelenska opened the International Cultural Diplomacy Forum, which brings together Ukrainian and international experts.
