Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a support package worth more than €1.3 billion during Merz’s visit to Kyiv on Oct. 4. The package includes military assistance and funding for Ukraine’s energy sector ahead of winter, according to the Ukrainian presidential office. The leaders also honored fallen Ukrainian soldiers at Independence Square and visited the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, where they met first responders who handled the aftermath of a Sept. 28 Russian strike. The presidential office said a direct hit by a Russian Shahed drone killed two people and injured seven others. The discussions focused on strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses, supplying interceptor drones and supporting energy infrastructure. The two governments also discussed expanded defense cooperation and plans for joint production. During a Ukrainian-German business forum, officials announced the signing of 15 agreements involving companies from both countries. The agreements cover air defense, defense industry cooperation, energy and other sectors, with Zelenskyy saying the partnership involves assistance, purchases, co-production and the exchange of expertise.
