Tin Can Bay Joins Marine Rescue

The Tin Can Bay Flotilla of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association has officially transitioned to Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ), becoming known as MRQ Tin Can Bay. The change is part of a broader regional move involving flotillas in Caloundra, Mooloolaba, Noosa and Sandy Straits.

The volunteers will continue providing marine safety services with the same crews, local knowledge and community connections developed over the group’s 50-year history. Their responsibilities will remain focused on supporting people in trouble on or near the water.

MRQ Chief Officer Tony Wulff welcomed the volunteers, saying their experience and commitment would contribute to a stronger statewide marine rescue service. Unit Commander John Macfarlane said the Tin Can Bay team would also maintain its community engagement, including regular appearances at local markets.

Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association National Commodore Matthew Semmens described the transition as a significant milestone and thanked current and former volunteers, their families and local supporters. MRQ operates as a Queensland Government-funded volunteer service within the Queensland Police Service framework, with its own governance, structure and uniforms.
