Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv expects another tranche of European Union budget support in the coming days, as the country continues to seek military and economic assistance amid Russia’s war. He made the remarks in an address published Sept. 29 on the Ukrainian presidential website. Zelenskyy said Russia had carried out strikes on residential areas in Sumy and Kyiv. According to his account, four aerial bombs hit Sumy, killing one person and heavily damaging a school. He said children and teachers were sheltering at the time and that no one at the school was injured. He also reported overnight ballistic missile and drone attacks on Kyiv, saying some of the weapons were intercepted. The president said Ukraine was preparing talks with partners on air defense and additional support. He thanked allies for recently delivering a package of NASAMS missiles and said discussions were continuing over supplies for Patriot systems. Zelenskyy also announced that Belgium had decided to provide Ukraine with three additional F-16 aircraft this year. Zelenskyy said Ukraine had received €3.3 billion for weapons the previous week and was expecting further budget assistance from Brussels. He also said he had discussed energy security, critical infrastructure and support for Ukrainian exporters with the president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The president added that Ukraine was expanding production of interceptor systems and had set new targets for October.
