Parliament Sets Agenda for Key EU Debates

The European Parliament will focus on monetary policy, cancer prevention, civil protection and climate action during committee and political group meetings from Sept. 28 to Oct. 4, 2026.

On Monday, Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee members will hold a monetary dialogue with European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde. Discussions are expected to cover the ECB’s recent actions, artificial intelligence and inflation dynamics. The Public Health Committee will also assess implementation of the EU’s cancer plan, including proposals on tobacco labelling and alcohol advertising.

The Culture and Education Committee is scheduled to decide Tuesday on the next Erasmus+ programme for 2028-2034. Members are expected to consider expanding the scheme to volunteering and increasing its funding. From Tuesday to Wednesday, lawmakers, national parliamentarians, civil society representatives and academics will take part in the EU Parliamentary Democracy Forum, which will examine democratic resilience and public trust in institutions.

On Thursday, the Environment and Public Health committees will vote on a new seven-year civil protection mechanism, with MEPs seeking expanded funding and measures for crisis monitoring and anticipation. The Environment Committee will also adopt priorities for the COP31 climate conference in Antalya, Türkiye. Political groups will prepare for the Oct. 5-8 plenary session, which is expected to address defence innovation, EU-China relations, anti-corruption measures, worker protections and other issues.
