Zelenskyy Urges Continued Support for Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on international partners to maintain their support for Ukraine and resist becoming accustomed to the country’s ongoing war with Russia. Speaking at a National Prayer Breakfast on Aug. 23, he urged allies to “speak more about Ukraine,” do more to assist the country and visit Ukrainians whenever possible.

The address, delivered on Ukraine’s Flag Day, brought together Ukrainian officials, religious leaders, diplomats and foreign representatives, including Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal. Zelenskyy said prayer and shared concern for peace had united people across religious, political and national lines during the conflict.

Zelenskyy thanked Ukrainian soldiers, military chaplains and clergy members for their wartime service. He highlighted the role of churches and religious communities in providing shelters, warming centers, classrooms and support for troops and civilians.

The president also called for unity among Ukrainians, distinguishing forgiveness within Ukrainian society from accountability for those responsible for the invasion and alleged war crimes. He asked participants to pray for prisoners of war, soldiers and a “just” and lasting peace for Ukraine, Europe and the wider world.
