Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in Kyiv on Aug. 22 to discuss continued military and humanitarian support for Ukraine, including preparations for winter and efforts to strengthen air defenses. Zelenskyy thanked Germany for its assistance and for Wadephul’s visit, which included participation in the ninth International Veterans Forum. The German minister also plans to visit several Ukrainian regions affected by Russian shelling, according to the Ukrainian president’s office. The talks focused on the impact of Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure and residents, as well as measures to protect Ukraine through the winter. Zelenskyy highlighted air defense as a priority and praised Germany’s role in providing assistance. The officials also discussed protecting routes used to transport Ukrainian agricultural products. They further addressed negotiations on an agreement under the “Drone Deal” format, Ukraine’s European integration and preparations for a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Kyiv. Zelenskyy also briefed Wadephul on diplomatic contacts with representatives of U.S. President Donald Trump.
