Queensland police are increasing traffic patrols and community engagement activities across the Capricornia District during Queensland Road Safety Week, following two alleged high-speed driving incidents near Gracemere and Miriam Vale. Officers from Calliope Highway Patrol intercepted a blue Ford Mustang on the Bruce Highway near Gracemere at about 10:20 a.m. on August 15. Police allege the vehicle was travelling at 144 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. A 43-year-old Gracemere man was issued a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 km/h. About 30 minutes later, officers intercepted a red Ducati motorcycle on Fingerboard Road near Miriam Vale. The motorcycle was allegedly travelling at 162 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. A 43-year-old West Stowe man received a similar infringement notice. Police said both men were fined $1,986, lost eight demerit points and had their licences suspended for six months. High-visibility and covert enforcement operations, along with community events, will continue from August 17 to 21. Police said 18 people have died on Capricornia District roads this year, one more than during the same period last year, and urged motorists to avoid speeding, impaired or distracted driving, fatigue and failing to wear seatbelts.
