Ukraine Plans New Frontline Command Changes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Aug. 17 that experienced commanders would receive greater authority as Kyiv prepares organizational changes and additional resources for forces operating in the Slovyansk, Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk areas.

Following a meeting with military officials and the defense minister, Zelenskyy said five personnel decisions had already been approved and that further appointments were expected. He also said Ukraine’s long-range operations would continue, with priorities for strikes through September established after a review of activity during the first half of August.

Zelenskyy said officials were coordinating with intelligence agencies, the Foreign Ministry and security services on new sanctions packages intended to restrict Russia’s military capabilities. He criticized the continued supply of goods to Russia from some G7 countries and called on partners to take steps that would help reduce Moscow’s ability to wage war.

The president also said Ukraine was working to arrange additional prisoner exchanges. He announced plans for an upcoming National Security and Defense Council meeting on road safety after a crash in Kyiv, calling for stronger accountability for repeat traffic offenders and broader involvement by lawmakers, civil society and state institutions in preparing reforms.
