Driver Fined After Extreme Speeding

Queensland police have fined a 56-year-old Emerald man after allegedly detecting him driving at 155 km/h in a signed 100 km/h zone near Townsville. The driver was issued an infringement notice carrying a $1,986 fine and eight demerit points.

Townsville Highway Patrol officers were patrolling Gregory Development Road at about 10:50 a.m. on July 24 when they observed a silver Toyota LandCruiser approaching at high speed. Mobile radar recorded the vehicle travelling 55 km/h above the posted limit.

Police said the driver allegedly told officers he had been distracted during the intercept. The offence occurred as Queensland marked the beginning of Road Safety Week, with police warning that excessive speed and driver distraction can significantly increase the risk of serious or fatal crashes.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Rhys Wildman urged motorists to remain alert, avoid driving while impaired or fatigued, and follow the road rules. Senior Sergeant Rob Nalder also reminded drivers that mobile phones, passengers, stress and rushing can all reduce concentration behind the wheel.
