Crash Survivor Reunites With Rescuers

Nearly nine years after a life-changing motorcycle crash, Zach Nightingale has reunited with the Queensland police officers, firefighters and paramedics who helped save his life. The meeting coincided with Queensland Road Safety Week, held from August 17 to 21.

Nightingale was riding on Drayton Wellcamp Road at Wellcamp on December 16, 2017, when he collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle. He suffered severe injuries, including the loss of his right leg, and faced a lengthy recovery.

Senior Constable Matthew Stoyles, who was among the first police officers at the scene, said the reunion brought back memories of the crash. Nightingale said he was grateful to the emergency workers who assisted him and credited their actions with helping him survive.

He urged drivers and motorcyclists to slow down, avoid taking risks and consider the wider consequences of dangerous road behaviour. Queensland Police Southern Region Assistant Commissioner Matthew Vanderbyl said serious crashes affect injured people, families, witnesses, emergency responders and the broader community.

Queensland Police said 200 people had died on the state’s roads so far in 2026, including 37 in the Southern Region. Of those regional deaths, 17 occurred in the Darling Downs District, 16 in the Ipswich District and four in the South West District.
