A 17-year-old provisional driver has been fined nearly $2,000 and had her licence suspended after allegedly being caught travelling more than 70 km/h over the speed limit at Gowrie Mountain in Queensland. Queensland Police said officers intercepted a Honda Jazz travelling at 171 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the Warrego Highway at about 5pm on August 7. The driver had held her licence for approximately seven weeks. The teenager was issued a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 km/h. She was fined $1,986, received eight demerit points and had her licence suspended for six months. Darling Downs District Acting Superintendent Kelly Hanlen warned that excessive speed left drivers with little time to react to hazards and increased the risk of serious injury or death. Police urged motorists, particularly newly licensed drivers, to follow speed limits and make responsible decisions on the road.
