An 18-year-old P-plater has been fined $1,986 and had his licence suspended for six months after allegedly being caught travelling 169km/h in a 90km/h zone at Blue Mountain Heights. Toowoomba Highway Patrol officers intercepted an Audi A5 on the New England Highway at about 8.40pm on August 3. Police said the driver was travelling 79km/h above the posted speed limit. The teenager was issued a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40km/h. He also received eight demerit points, while the vehicle was immobilised for 90 days. Acting Senior Sergeant Jo Goodwin described the alleged speed as reckless and dangerous, particularly for a driver with limited experience. Queensland Police said 188 people had died on the state’s roads so far this year, including 17 in the Darling Downs District.
