Ukraine Seeks Faster EU Accession

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv is seeking an accelerated path to European Union membership while urging international partners to strengthen air defense support. In an address published Aug. 4, he said Ukraine’s EU accession process was closely tied to the country’s security and Europe’s ability to defend itself.

Zelenskyy said negotiations on opening EU accession clusters had begun and that Ukraine wanted integration efforts to proceed in parallel rather than sequentially. He said Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi and Deputy Prime Minister Vsevolod Chentsov were preparing an accelerated accession program, with details expected in August.

The president also discussed diplomatic coordination with the United States and said Ukrainian officials remained in contact with U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys. He said Kyiv was preparing for negotiations in various formats and was continuing discussions with other partners, including Gulf countries, but did not provide further details.

Zelenskyy reported that Ukrainian security officials had approved new operations and reviewed priorities for August. He also cited Defense Ministry figures claiming that Ukrainian forces used drones to kill or severely wound 30,272 Russian troops in July, based only on incidents supported by video evidence. He said air defense remained Ukraine’s top priority and urged partners to recognize the role of each delivery in protecting civilian lives.
