Raby Bay Rescue Joins State Service

Marine rescue volunteers at Raby Bay have transitioned from the Volunteer Marine Rescue Association of Queensland to Marine Rescue Queensland, as part of a statewide effort to establish a modern, government-funded marine rescue service.

Based at Cleveland Point, the Raby Bay unit has nearly 100 volunteers and operates its radio room daily from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. The unit supports boaters and other mariners in the busy southeast Queensland area.

Unit Commander Peter McKendry said the transition marked “an exciting next chapter” while emphasizing that the same volunteers would continue providing marine rescue and water safety services to the local community. The change in uniforms, he said, would not alter the team’s commitment to public safety.

The broader transition to Marine Rescue Queensland is expected to be completed by the end of the year. In life-threatening situations, authorities advise people to call Triple Zero (000).
