A 55-year-old man has died while in custody at the Brisbane City Watchhouse, prompting an investigation by the Queensland Police Service’s Ethical Standards Command. The man, from Thornlands, was arrested at a residence in the suburb at 10:50 a.m. on July 17 in connection with a return-to-prison warrant. He was then taken to the Brisbane City Watchhouse. Shortly after 3 p.m. on July 20, the man reported feeling unwell and was assessed by nursing staff and emergency services. He later became unresponsive and was declared dead. The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the death on behalf of the State Coroner, with independent oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.
