Zelenskyy Vows Stronger Northern Defenses

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the country would strengthen defenses along its northern border during a visit to Slavutych on May 21, 2026. He met with community leaders from the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions to discuss border security, fortifications and local infrastructure.

Zelenskyy said defensive measures would be reinforced along areas facing Belarus and Russia’s Bryansk region. He warned that Ukraine could respond preventively to threats originating from Russian territory and said Belarusian authorities would face consequences if they supported aggressive actions against Ukraine. He also recalled that Russian forces advanced into Ukraine from Belarus during the 2022 invasion.

The president said Ukraine’s armed forces, security services and intelligence agencies were prepared to respond to threats. He also credited the military with a long-range strike against the Syzran oil refinery in Russia’s Samara region, about 800 kilometers from Ukraine’s border, and praised a Security Service operation in Ukraine’s Kherson region. Local officials discussed road repairs, military logistics, medical evacuations, air defense and energy resilience. Zelenskyy said the most urgent road problems in the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions should be addressed in June, while additional air-defense equipment and funding for border defenses would be provided. He also said he would hold talks with European partners, including the E3, on diplomatic pressure and support for Ukraine.
