Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with senior German officials on May 14 to discuss strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses, countering threats from Russia and expanding European security cooperation, according to the Ukrainian president’s office. The meeting in Kyiv included Thorsten Frei, Germany’s federal minister for special tasks and head of the Federal Chancellery, and Martin Jäger, president of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service. Discussions focused on quickly implementing agreements aimed at preparing Ukraine for the winter and improving its ability to defend against Russian strikes. The officials also discussed a proposed “Drone Deals” format for security cooperation and possible coordination among European countries through E3 and E5 groupings. Zelenskyy called for a stronger European role in negotiations aimed at achieving what he described as a dignified peace. Zelenskyy also highlighted Ukraine’s goal of joining the European Union and said the country was ready to open all six negotiating clusters with Germany’s support. He thanked Berlin for backing an EU decision to provide Ukraine with a €90 billion loan and urged the first tranche to be transferred quickly to support drone production.
