In a significant crackdown on migrant smuggling, a coordinated operation led by French authorities with support from Europol has resulted in the arrest of eight individuals involved in a Vietnamese smuggling network. The operation, which spanned across France, Germany, and Hungary, was carried out on March 30, 2026, and targeted a network facilitating illegal migration to the United Kingdom. The criminal organization, leveraging social media, targeted Vietnamese nationals, orchestrating their travel through various European countries. Migrants were initially brought into the Schengen Area using Hungarian-issued visas or residence permits, then transported by air to France, and finally smuggled into the UK via small boats. The operation unveiled the involvement of a Kurdish-Iraqi network in Northern France, responsible for the sea crossings to the UK. The operation yielded significant results including the seizure of 20 passports, three vehicles, electronic devices, and EUR 10,000 in cash. Authorities estimate that the network has accumulated up to EUR 3 million in criminal profits, charging each migrant up to EUR 22,000 for the journey. Europol played a crucial role in the operation by facilitating information exchange and providing analytical support. On the action day, Europol deployed an expert to France to assist with real-time data analysis and coordination. The success of this operation highlights the evolving challenge of digitalization in criminal activities, with criminal networks increasingly using online platforms to manage their operations and launder money. In response to the growing threat of migrant smuggling, Europol has intensified its efforts with the establishment of the European Centre Against Migrant Smuggling (ECAMS) in March 2026. This new department aims to enhance the EU’s capacity to disrupt smuggling activities through better coordination and advanced digital investigative tools.
