Queensland Police officers and Police Dog Daphne visited children and adolescents at Cairns Hospital ahead of Easter, continuing a long-running tradition aimed at bringing comfort to patients spending the holiday in hospital. Daphne wore bunny ears and booties during the visit, accompanied by her handler, Senior Constable Glen Buckle, and Officer in Charge Sergeant Dan Fysh. Officers from Cairns and Edmonton stations also distributed Easter eggs, toys, stickers and colouring books donated by the Cairns Police Social Club. Sergeant Fysh said the visit provided an opportunity for officers to connect with patients and hospital staff outside their usual duties. He described the police dogs as highly skilled detection animals that also enjoy interacting with members of the community. Rylie Lee Long, nurse unit manager of Cairns Hospital’s paediatrics department, said the visit helped reduce stress and provided comfort for children facing a difficult experience. Queensland Police and the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service wished the community a safe and happy Easter.
