In a significant move towards strengthening legal frameworks against corruption, the European Parliament has announced the imminent press conference to discuss the newly approved Anti-Corruption Directive. Scheduled for 26 March from 12:00 to 12:30 CET at the European Parliament’s Spaak building in Brussels, the conference will feature President Roberta Metsola and rapporteur Raquel García Hermida-van der Walle MEP (Renew, NL).

The directive, hailed as the first EU-wide criminal law framework to combat corruption, introduces uniform definitions for corruption offenses including bribery, misappropriation, and illicit enrichment. It aims to harmonize rules on sanctions and establish preventive obligations for member states. This comprehensive legal framework is designed to minimize disparities between national laws and address enforcement gaps in cross-border cases.

Further details reveal that member states are required to develop national anti-corruption strategies and maintain relevant data in comparable formats. The directive also bolsters cooperation among national authorities and crucial EU bodies such as OLAF, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, Europol, and Eurojust. The press conference will be accessible in person to accredited journalists and remotely via Interactio platform, with provisions for live streaming through the Parliament’s Multimedia Centre.
