After a notable 42-year career, Assistant Commissioner Brett Schafferius of the Queensland Police Service (QPS) has begun his pre-retirement leave, marking the end of an era for the Far Northern Region’s policing. Schafferius, who was appointed as Assistant Commissioner in July 2018, is celebrated for his significant contributions to major crime operations, disaster management, and fostering strong community relations. Throughout his extensive service, Schafferius has been pivotal in implementing cultural changes within the force and enhancing the safety and cohesion of the communities in Far North Queensland. Reflecting on his career, he expressed immense pride in the achievements and dedication of his team, emphasizing the unseen hard work that contributes to regional safety and community well-being. Starting his journey with QPS in 1985, Schafferius climbed the ranks from a constable in Townsville to leading significant departments such as the Cairns Drug Squad and Mareeba Criminal Investigation Branch. His leadership roles included being the Officer in Charge at the Ipswich Police Station and various inspectorate and superintendent positions before his final role as Assistant Commissioner.
