President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine paid a heartfelt tribute to the fallen defenders of the village of Moshchun, a pivotal site during the early stages of the Russian offensive on Kyiv in 2022. The solemn ceremony took place at the “Angels of Victory” memorial on March 21, 2026, marking the anniversary of the day when Ukrainian forces reclaimed Moshchun from Russian troops. During the commemoration, President Zelenskyy lit a candle at the memorial stele and engaged in personal conversations with the families and loved ones of those who sacrificed their lives in the defense. In his address, he expressed deep gratitude and sorrow, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the valor and sacrifice of the heroes who defended not only Moshchun but also the broader Kyiv region and the sovereignty of Ukraine. “It is deeply regrettable that they are no longer with us. They remain in our lives, in our history. We thank them for defending Ukraine, tragically, at such a high cost,” Zelenskyy stated. The President also extended his appreciation to the surviving defenders present at the event, acknowledging their continued resistance against ongoing Russian aggression. He underscored the essential victory achieved by the fallen and surviving warriors, which has allowed the nation and its future generations to endure. “The key fact, known to us all, is that they achieved the most important thing: we are here, we are alive, Ukraine lives, and our children are here. That is the most important thing,” Zelenskyy remarked, stressing the significance of concluding the war justly and honoring all who fought, known and unknown. Moshchun’s strategic importance was highlighted during the conflict as it served as a critical defensive line on the Hostomel–Bucha–Irpin route, a key approach towards Kyiv. The successful defense and subsequent expulsion of Russian forces from the area on March 21, 2022, represented a significant turning point in the battle for Kyiv.
