In a significant crackdown on crime, South Brisbane District (SBD) police have charged 1,391 individuals with a total of 4,072 offenses as part of Operation Xray Steeler, which commenced in October 2025. The operation underscores a robust strategy to mitigate and solve community-harming crimes and reduce victimization rates across Brisbane’s southern suburbs.

Since its inception, Operation Xray Steeler has employed intelligence-led patrols enhancing the detection and subsequent arrest of offenders. The breakdown of charges includes 1,120 adults implicated in 2,979 offenses and 271 juveniles in 1,093 offenses. High-visibility patrols continue in areas identified through intelligence as high-risk, ensuring proactive crime prevention.

Among the notable charges laid are unlawful use of motor vehicles, break-ins, robberies, assaults, and various driving offenses, including drink and drug driving, alongside possession of weapons, drug offenses, and instances of domestic violence. Acting Chief Superintendent Heath McQueen highlighted the strategic success of the operation, stating that the targeted locations and timings have been pivotal in deterring criminal activities.

The operation’s comprehensive impact also spans community engagement, with police conducting 682 business engagements, 32 business security assessments, and over 18,000 community interactions. Traffic enforcement was equally rigorous, with over 13,000 random breath tests and numerous traffic infringement notices issued for various violations, enhancing road safety.

Operation Xray Steeler, still ongoing, will receive additional support from the newly established Operation Yankee Forge, which aims to extend state-wide intelligence and specialist capabilities to further combat unlawful activities. As the community-driven initiative progresses, SBD police are committed to maintaining public safety and encouraging community members to report suspicious activities.

For reporting information or crimes, the public can contact Policelink or anonymously through Crime Stoppers. The continued effort reflects a dual strategy of high-visibility and covert operations to significantly reduce crime rates and enhance the sense of security among residents of South Brisbane.
