Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, recently engaged in crucial discussions with Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ghana, aimed at bolstering bilateral cooperation between the two nations. This meeting, part of a continuous effort to strengthen international alliances, took place against the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical tensions.

During the discussions, President Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude towards Ghana for its consistent support in various United Nations forums, emphasizing the importance of international backing in Ukraine’s struggle for independence and global influence. “Yesterday we had a very important resolution, and for us it was crucial to receive at least as much support – even at the political level – as in previous years,” Zelenskyy remarked, highlighting the ongoing challenges on the international stage.

Minister Ablakwa reiterated Ghana’s commitment to upholding the territorial integrity and sovereignty of nations, aligning firmly with the principles of the UN Charter. The talks also delved into potential areas for deeper cooperation such as defense, agriculture, and education, with particular focus on expanding educational opportunities for Ghanaian students in Ukraine. Furthermore, the discussions addressed concerns over the recruitment of Ghanaian citizens by Russia for involvement in conflicts, noting that approximately 272 Ghanaians are currently engaged in such activities.

The meeting set the stage for future collaboration, with President Zelenskyy extending an invitation to the Ghanaian President to visit Ukraine. This invitation comes at a strategic time as Ghana prepares to assume the chairmanship of the African Union next year, positioning it as a pivotal player in regional and global diplomacy.
