Capalaba Highway Patrol issued multiple fines to a 20-year-old man from Cleveland after he was caught driving significantly over the speed limit in Chandler, Queensland. This incident occurred around 8:30 am on February 20, when the young motorcyclist was detected speeding and committing other traffic violations on Old Cleveland Road. The rider, who was on a Yamaha motorcycle, was reportedly traveling at 144 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. Additionally, he was found unlawfully lane filtering and driving with a defective vehicle. The rear tyre of the motorcycle was not compliant for road use, leading to further penalties. The total fines amounted to $2,585, and the man also received 12 demerit points. His license will be suspended for six months. Senior Sergeant Stephen Lees, Officer in Charge at Capalaba Highway Patrol, emphasized the broader implications of such reckless driving behaviors. He highlighted the direct impact of speeding on the safety of both the rider and other road users. “We want to see a decrease in crashes and fatalities on our local roads, but for this to be possible long-term, it requires a community commitment to making safe decisions behind the wheel,” Lees stated. He also warned that the community should expect ongoing speed enforcement activities by local police “anywhere, anytime.” The Queensland Police Service remains committed to reducing road fatalities, stressing that every decision made by drivers can significantly affect road safety. As of February 19, Queensland has witnessed a slight decrease in road fatalities compared to the previous year, with proactive policing and community cooperation playing crucial roles in these efforts.
