In a significant operation led by Bulgarian authorities and supported by Europol, a criminal network involved in smuggling migrants from Türkiye through Bulgaria to Western Europe has been dismantled. This operation resulted in the arrest of 16 individuals and the search of six locations, revealing a well-organized pyramid-structured network with international ties.

The investigation, initiated within the framework of a regional Operational Taskforce targeting migrant smuggling routes through Bulgaria, unveiled a network primarily composed of Bulgarian and Syrian nationals. These individuals coordinated the transit of migrants from Türkiye, across the Bulgarian territory, and on to either Serbia or Romania. Migrants were typically gathered at predetermined points and transported in various vehicles to Sofia, where they were temporarily housed in safe locations before continuing their journey.

Europol’s involvement included deploying an expert to Sofia and providing real-time support through database cross-checks during the action day. Since September 2023, Europol has enhanced its role in combating migrant smuggling through operational support and data-driven analysis. The operation was part of broader efforts underpinned by the new EU legislation, Regulation (EU) 2025/2611, which aims to fortify the European response to migrant smuggling by establishing the European Centre against Migrant Smuggling (ECAMS).

This operation underscores the ongoing challenges and criminal activities associated with migrant smuggling within the EU, highlighting the need for coordinated multinational efforts to tackle this pervasive issue effectively.
