Storm Alert: Townsville Braces for Cyclone

An urgent cyclone alert has been issued by the Townsville Local Disaster Management Group, urging residents from Mutarnee to Cungulla, including Magnetic Island, to prepare as a tropical low intensifies off the northeast Queensland coast. The warning, classified as “WATCH AND ACT,” was released following the detection of the tropical low, which is expected to escalate into a cyclone by this evening, with landfall anticipated near Townsville early Sunday.

As the system approaches, conditions are expected to deteriorate significantly, with forecasted gale-strength winds commencing from 4pm today. Residents are advised to secure loose items, complete necessary preparations on their properties, and ensure their emergency kits are ready. The Queensland Police Service stresses the importance of safety, advising the public to call Triple Zero (000) in life-threatening situations and the State Emergency Service (SES) at 132 500 for storm-related assistance.

Preparation measures include storing outdoor items securely, unplugging electrical appliances, and stocking up on essential supplies such as water, food, and medicine to last at least five days. The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group also recommends filling vehicles with fuel and parking them under cover, away from trees.
