In a comprehensive update, Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine, has outlined the progress of the national mental health initiative “How Are You?” this year. Addressing the need for accessible mental health services across various sectors, the program integrates psychological support within the community fabric, reaching out to individuals in familiar, non-clinical settings such as family doctor offices, social work centers, and educational institutions.

Since its inception, “How Are You?” has significantly expanded, now operating in over 2,200 primary healthcare facilities with the help of more than 16,000 healthcare professionals. This network includes 326 resilience centers and 150 mental health centers aimed at providing barrier-free access to psychosocial services and hosting over 2.5 million participants in various activities. The initiative also encompasses educational efforts, introducing the “Lessons of Happiness” social-emotional learning course in 44 pilot schools, and mandating mental health components in higher education curriculums.

The First Lady emphasized the holistic approach of the program, integrating mental health into sectors beyond healthcare, such as economy, education, and security. This year, the initiative was anchored into law, underscoring its foundational role in Ukrainian society. The program also includes innovative methods such as VR technology and biofeedback therapy, and it has supported over 21,200 Ukrainians, including emergency service employees and police officers, through psychological training programs.

Zelenska highlighted the cultural shift towards a community-based support system, where mental health care is seen as part of everyday life rather than a service sought only in times of crisis. This shift has been supported by a robust communication campaign, online platforms, and monthly regional support events, aiming to foster a supportive community network across the nation. As Ukraine continues to navigate through challenging times, initiatives like “How Are You?” play a crucial role in sustaining and strengthening the nation’s psychological resilience.
