The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has issued an urgent call for all organizations utilizing branded identifiers in SMS communications to register their sender IDs with their telecom providers. This move comes ahead of the introduction of the SMS Sender ID Register, scheduled to launch on July 1, 2026. The initiative aims to bolster safeguards against scam messages impersonating legitimate entities and to enhance consumer trust in SMS communications.

Starting July 2026, only messages sent from registered IDs will display the sender’s name, while unregistered IDs will show up as ‘Unverified,’ helping recipients identify potential scam messages. ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin highlighted the importance of registration, warning that unregistered messages could be mistaken for scams, potentially disrupting communications and harming the organization’s reputation.

Organizations, including banks, healthcare providers, retailers, and not-for-profits, are encouraged to contact their telecom providers to register. The ACMA website lists all participating telecom providers, with more expected to join. The register is part of the government’s broader Fighting Scams initiative, designed to protect Australians from scams and online fraud.
