In a groundbreaking move aimed at securing educational environments, the Olena Zelenska Foundation has inaugurated the “Safe School” project by unveiling a newly equipped shelter at a Hub Lyceum in Kaharlyk, Kyiv region. The initiative was launched in a ceremony attended by Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska, Austria’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Robert Müller, and Christoph Reiter, Head of Building and Property Management Department of the Lower Austrian Government.

The shelter, sprawling over 800 square meters within the lyceum premises, has been meticulously restored to serve nearly 900 students, one-third of whom travel from surrounding villages. It now features designated areas for study and relaxation and is fully accessible to individuals with disabilities. First Lady Zelenska expressed her gratitude towards the Lower Austrian government for their crucial support in this endeavor.

The project extends beyond mere structural enhancement. It incorporates critical safety drills conducted by professional rescuers, police officers, and emergency medical specialists, covering essential topics like mine safety, fire safety, road safety, and first aid. The holistic approach underscores the necessity of a school being more than just a building—it should be a safe, functional space conducive to everyday life, providing warmth, light, and nourishment.

Enhancements are set to continue with modernization of the lyceum’s kitchen facilities, which will soon cater to an additional 400 children from five neighboring schools. This expansion is part of a broader ambition by the Foundation, which has already upgraded over 30 educational institution shelters across various Ukrainian regions and plans to refurbish 50 more by 2026. This initiative reflects a commitment to ensuring that children can pursue their education in safe, dignified conditions, even amidst ongoing conflict.
