Strasbourg, November 24, 2025 – In a significant move to enhance online safety for minors, the European Parliament will hold a press conference to discuss new protective measures following a crucial vote. The conference, led by Vice-President Christel Schaldemose, will take place on Wednesday at the Daphne Caruana Galizia press conference room and will be available via webstreaming. The upcoming own-initiative report, debated this Tuesday and set for a vote on Wednesday, proposes stringent regulations including bans on addictive designs and gambling-like features in online games, and setting the minimum age for social media access at 16. These measures aim to strengthen the enforcement of the EU’s Digital Services Act and AI Act, addressing legal loopholes to safeguard younger internet users. The press conference will provide an opportunity for journalists to engage directly with the developments via the Interactio platform, where questions can be asked in English, French, German, and Danish. This initiative comes in response to increasing concerns over mental health risks and the pervasive reach of social media addiction among youth, spotlighting the need for tighter controls on content and interactive mechanisms that target this demographic.
