A new survey conducted by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) highlights significant improvements in the quality of life for individuals who have opted for self-exclusion from online and phone wagering services. According to the research, a remarkable 77% of participants registered with BetStop, the National Self-Exclusion Register™, reported enhanced overall life quality.

The study, carried out by ORIMA Research on behalf of ACMA, further revealed that 79% of those registered experienced a boost in mental health, while 69% noted improvements in personal relationships. Additionally, a substantial 96% of participants have either ceased or reduced their betting activities, with 81% stopping completely and 15% decreasing their involvement.

ACMA member Carolyn Lidgerwood emphasized the positive impact of the self-exclusion register on managing detrimental gambling behaviors. “The national self-exclusion register is having a positive impact, and it’s heartening to see the compelling stories shared by registrants,” Lidgerwood stated. She also highlighted the ease and life-changing potential of the registration process, which takes only five minutes.

The release of these findings coincides with the register reaching a milestone of over 50,000 Australians opting for self-exclusion since its inception in August 2023. The ongoing statutory review of the NSER aims to further refine and enhance the initiative. For those seeking to self-exclude, registration is accessible online with basic identification documents.
