In a significant escalation of economic pressures, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the enactment of two critical decrees aimed at synchronizing with the European Union’s latest sanctions against Russia. On November 6, 2025, these decrees bring Ukraine in line with the EU’s 19th sanctions package and impose additional restrictions targeting Russian entities involved in Arctic resource extraction. The 19th EU sanctions package, now adopted by Ukraine, targets 14 individuals and 57 legal entities. These sanctions focus on those supporting Russia’s military engagements and those circumventing existing sanctions, including Russian and Belarusian strategic enterprises’ leaders and firms involved in military and industrial sectors. The sanctions notably impact Russian resource exports and the supply chains of electronic components, with an anticipated reduction in Russian income amounting to tens of billions of euros annually. Further tightening the noose, the second decree specifically addresses individuals and entities engaged in the extraction and export of Russian energy resources in the Arctic region. This includes 18 individuals and 36 legal entities spanning various sectors, from military engineering to geological exploration and raw material production. These measures also target entities involved in the maritime export of Russian coal, aiming to close loopholes used to evade sanctions through intermediary companies. President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the international support and hinted at future sanctions coordinated with global partners, targeting Russian propaganda efforts and military production. He also criticized Russian retaliatory measures against Ukrainian officials, underscoring the global commitment to end the conflict. This strategic alignment with the EU underscores Ukraine’s resolve in its stand against Russian aggression, reinforcing international efforts to curb conflict-related activities.
