A 32-year-old woman from Birkdale has been charged with 40 counts of stealing following a police investigation into financial elder abuse at a Redland Bay aged care facility. Detectives from the Wynnum Criminal Investigations Branch allege that the woman misused a debit card belonging to a 104-year-old man, making unauthorized purchases and withdrawals that accumulated to thousands of dollars.

The investigation was launched on August 21, after a coworker of the suspect reported the missing debit card on behalf of the elderly victim. The aged care facility cooperated fully with the police throughout the investigation process. The woman was apprehended at a Birkdale address on October 28 and is scheduled to appear before Cleveland Magistrates Court on November 11.

Detective Inspector Wayne Francis of the South Brisbane District Bayside Crime Group emphasized the commitment of the Queensland Police Service to protecting elderly community members from such breaches of trust. He also thanked the aged care facility for their prompt action in reporting the incident and aiding the investigation. The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of elder abuse immediately.
