Norway has committed an additional $150 million in energy support to Ukraine for gas purchases this winter, announced during a diplomatic meeting in Oslo between Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This new package increases Norway’s total energy assistance to Ukraine this year to approximately $400 million.

The announcement followed discussions on the recent Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and residential areas. Prime Minister Støre expressed his condolences and praised the resilience of the Ukrainian people amidst ongoing conflict. The leaders also deliberated over Ukraine’s defense needs, including air defense systems and missiles, aiming to bolster the nation’s capabilities through the winter months.

Further, the talks covered the expansion of defense cooperation, notably in drone and missile production, and the continuation of the PURL initiative, which Norway has supported. Last week’s $200 million contribution marked Norway’s second installment, following an initial collaborative effort with Sweden and Denmark that provided a $500 million weapons package earlier in August. President Zelenskyy expressed profound gratitude towards the Norwegian government and people for their substantial support and life-saving contributions.
