Queensland Police have intensified efforts to curb dangerous driving among motorcyclists in the Moreton and Sunshine Coast districts through Operation SMER (Strategic Motorcycle Enforcement Response). The operation, which took place on October 18 and 19, 2025, resulted in the issuance of 83 traffic infringement notices, with a significant number aimed at motorcyclists exceeding speed limits. During this initiative, six drivers were caught traveling over 40 km/h above the speed limit, with the most extreme case involving a Ducati Streetfighter V4 S caught at 172 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. The 48-year-old rider from Wurtulla faced severe penalties, including suspension of his driver’s license and fines totaling $2,385. The targeted patrols occurred in areas notorious for speed-related accidents and focused on both high visibility and covert operations to enhance road safety. Assistant Commissioner Darryl Johnson of the North Coast Region highlighted the importance of the operation, especially during Motorcycle Awareness Month. He emphasized the vulnerability of motorcyclists on the roads and the collective responsibility to adhere to safe driving practices. Johnson also noted the positive community feedback regarding the increased police presence. The Queensland Police Service remains dedicated to reducing road fatalities and incidents, particularly those involving motorcycles, which constitute 23.5% of all road deaths in the state this year. They continue to stress the dangers of the ‘Fatal Five’ behaviors—speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction—as major contributors to road accidents.
