In a bizarre and dangerous incident in Tallai, Queensland, a 59-year-old man has been charged after a stolen caravan, containing three young children, crashed into a ditch. The event occurred late yesterday afternoon, escalating into a dramatic roadside rescue. Police reports state that the incident began around 5:30 PM when the man, driving a Nissan X-Trail, arrived at a Glenrowan address. He proceeded to hitch a 1.5-tonne caravan, parked in the driveway and containing a 40-year-old woman and her children aged 7, 5, and 2, to his vehicle using only a single ratchet strap. The woman managed to exit the caravan before the man towed it away, but her pet dog, underneath the caravan, was injured as the caravan was moved. The caravan then gained momentum down a hill, surpassing the X-Trail, before both vehicles ended up in a ditch about 80 meters from the driveway. The mother courageously climbed onto the caravan and rescued her children through a skylight, fortunately finding them unharmed. The driver was taken to the hospital as a precaution, and the dog sustained leg and head injuries. The man is now facing charges for unlawful use of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He is scheduled for a court appearance at the Southport Magistrates Court on November 10, 2025. Queensland Police urge anyone with information to come forward and contact Policelink or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers. This incident highlights the quick response of law enforcement in managing both traffic safety and child welfare within the community.
