As Brisbane’s school holidays conclude, local police are ramping up patrols in school zones, urging motorists to exercise caution and adhere to road safety regulations. Queensland Police Service (QPS) has initiated proactive high visibility and covert operations to ensure children’s safety as they return to school.

Motorists are advised to slow down, remain vigilant for pedestrians and cyclists, stop at school crossings, and avoid distractions while driving near school environments. These intensified efforts are part of Operation Xray Spring Break, which saw various traffic operations throughout the holiday period. Notable incidents include the apprehension of a man performing illegal vehicle maneuvers in Park Ridge, resulting in charges and vehicle impoundment.

Acting Senior Sergeant Jay Jordan of the Upper Mount Gravatt Highway Patrol emphasized the importance of adhering to reduced speed limits in school zones. “With school back in session, it’s crucial that drivers respect the lower speed limits designed to protect our children,” he stated.

In addition to regular patrols, Queensland Police are focusing on motorbike safety during Motorbike Awareness Month. This initiative comes in response to recent statistics indicating a slight increase in road fatalities across Queensland compared to the previous year. The police’s commitment to reducing road-related deaths involves educating the public on avoiding the ‘Fatal Five’ dangerous driving behaviors: speeding, drink and drug driving, failure to wear seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction.

The Queensland Police Service continues its efforts to ensure road safety, reminding everyone that maintaining safe roads is a shared responsibility.
