In response to a concerning increase in road fatalities, Queensland Police have heightened their efforts to combat unsafe driving behaviors during the ongoing Operation Xray Spring Break. This initiative, running until October 10, targets speed and drink driving offenses across the Darling Downs District. Since the operation’s commencement, three drivers have been charged with speeding and drink driving. Among them, a 31-year-old Bapaume man was caught traveling at 148 km/h in a 100 km/h zone along the New England Highway at Thulimba. The driver, also found to be over the legal alcohol limit, faces charges and will appear in Stanthorpe Magistrates Court on November 12. The operation comes as the district reports 24 road fatalities this year, three more than the same period in the previous year. Police stress the importance of avoiding the ‘Fatal Five’ behaviors, which include speeding, drink and drug driving, failure to wear seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction. These are considered major contributors to road accidents. Warwick Patrol Group Acting Inspector Gerard Brady emphasized the need for vigilance during this busy travel period. “The spring holidays see thousands of families and holidaymakers on the roads, and our goal is simple: ensuring everyone gets home safe,” he stated. The Queensland Police Service remains committed to reducing road fatalities through targeted enforcement and public awareness.
