In a heartfelt tribute, Queensland’s policing community and local residents gathered at candlelight vigils across the state to honor fallen officers ahead of National Police Remembrance Day. The solemn events, held annually, commemorate the bravery and dedication of officers who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. The Queensland Police Service Academy in Oxley hosted one such vigil in Brisbane, where attendees engaged in quiet reflection and laid wreaths as a mark of enduring respect and gratitude. The gathering saw serving and retired officers standing alongside families and friends of the departed, united in remembrance. Since 1861, 151 Queensland Police officers have lost their lives while serving their communities. This year’s vigils also paid tribute to officers from Tasmania and Victoria who recently lost their lives, underscoring a national bond within the policing community. Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski emphasized the significance of these gatherings, stating, “Each year, we gather in remembrance of our fallen officers who gave their lives in unwavering service to their communities. Across the nation, the policing family is bound together in respect, remembrance, and gratitude. We will continue to honor our fallen—not only today, but every day.” The vigils serve as a promise that the bravery and dedication of these officers will never be forgotten, strengthening the resolve of the policing community and the wider public to remember and honor their sacrifices.
