NASA is set to reveal groundbreaking findings from its Perseverance Mars rover, which analyzed a rock sample dubbed “Sapphire Canyon” collected in July 2024. The agency announced a news conference scheduled for 11 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, where scientists will discuss the findings, which are detailed in a forthcoming science paper.

The “Sapphire Canyon” sample was retrieved from rocky outcrops at Neretva Vallis, a river valley that once channeled water into the Jezero Crater. Since its landing in the crater in February 2021, Perseverance has amassed 30 samples, with six tubes still available for future collections. The rover continues its exploration, providing insights into the Martian environment and preparing for potential human missions.

Managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in collaboration with Caltech, the Perseverance mission demonstrates the agency’s commitment to advancing our understanding of Mars. The upcoming conference will feature prominent figures from NASA, including Acting Administrator Sean Duffy and Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya, who will share more about the mission’s progress.

The event will be broadcast on NASA’s YouTube channel and website, with opportunities for media members to ask questions. This latest discovery underscores NASA’s ongoing efforts to explore the mysteries of the Red Planet and the potential for future exploration.
