In an extensive crackdown on illegal firearms, Queensland Police have seized 609 firearms across the Northern Region in the first eight months of Operation Whiskey Firestorm. This initiative aims to reduce firearm-related crimes following statistics from 2024 that highlighted over 3,290 offenses involving firearms in the state. Launched as a proactive measure, Operation Whiskey Firestorm focuses on ensuring licensed gun owners comply with safe storage requirements to prevent weapons from falling into criminal hands. Police efforts have led to the confiscation of 609 firearms, including 108 illicit firearms and 112 parts and accessories. The operation has seen significant activity in the Townsville and Mount Isa districts. In Townsville, 405 firearms were seized, with 64 being illicit. Mount Isa saw 204 firearms confiscated, with 44 illicit firearms among them. Additionally, police conducted 511 weapons audits to ensure compliance with safety standards. Several individuals have been charged with multiple offenses related to illegal possession and unsafe storage of firearms. These include a 30-year-old Townsville woman and a 49-year-old Mount Isa man, both facing serious charges in upcoming court appearances. The operation underscores the need for vigilance among firearm owners, with police urging the community to report suspicious activity to help combat firearm-related crimes.
