In a recent Eurobarometer survey conducted by the European Parliament, 68% of European Union citizens expressed a desire for the EU to increase its role in safeguarding against international crises and security threats. The survey, which sampled opinions from across all 27 EU member states, highlights a collective call for greater unity and resources to tackle global challenges.

The study reveals that nine out of ten Europeans advocate for member states to collaborate more closely, while 77% of respondents believe the EU needs enhanced capabilities to navigate the rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape. Citizens prioritize defense and security, as well as competitiveness, economy, and industry, as key areas for the EU to focus on, underscoring growing concerns over political and economic stability.

Furthermore, the survey indicates a strong push for common financial efforts, with 78% of Europeans supporting increased EU-wide funding for projects rather than relying solely on individual member states. Transparency in spending is also a priority, with 91% of respondents emphasizing the need for the European Parliament to have full oversight over EU expenditures.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola commented on the findings, emphasizing the need for EU policies and budgetary allocations that address these citizen concerns. She stated, “EU citizens want Europe to focus on security and the economy. Our priorities and the EU’s next long-term budget must therefore allow the Union to tackle new geopolitical realities.” The survey’s results underline the significant impact EU actions have on citizens’ daily lives, with 73% acknowledging the benefits of EU membership, including peace, security, and economic growth.
