In a recent discussion, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Council President António Costa coordinated efforts to enhance pressure on Russia while bolstering support for Ukraine. This dialogue follows a devastating Russian strike on Kyiv on August 28, which resulted in the death of 25 individuals, including four children, and left many others wounded.

Expressing condolences to the victims and their families, Costa reiterated the European Union’s commitment to standing in solidarity with Ukraine. Zelenskyy, acknowledging this support, emphasized the necessity of a strong 19th EU sanctions package against Russia. He highlighted that despite Ukraine’s readiness for high-level discussions with international leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Russia has remained unresponsive to such overtures.

The conversation also touched upon the development of security guarantees, with Zelenskyy underscoring Ukraine’s aspirations for EU membership as a key component. He expressed optimism about joint progress with Moldova on this issue. Furthermore, the leaders discussed financial support for Ukraine’s drone production and the SAFE and PURL programs, with Costa affirming his commitment to enhancing their effectiveness.

President Zelenskyy extended an invitation to Costa to visit Ukraine, further strengthening the ties between the European Union and Ukraine in their joint efforts against Russian aggression.
